Mainao Basumatary belongs from the most vulnerable village under Chirang District, BTC, Assam. Her village, being close to the Bhutan Border, is highly vulnerable to human trafficking and displacement. Mainao was a drop out student of Class IX standard. She was offered a job to work across the border but because of the awareness created by Nedan Foundation about human trafficking and fraudulent recruitment agents, Mainao contacted Nedan. On investigation, it was found out that the agent was fraud and had manipulated many women to leave with him for better job prospects.
Being a skilled weaver and drop-out from school, she was supported by Nedan Foundation in Livelihood programme as she didn’t want to continue her studies. Therefore she was appointed in Weaving Destination as a Weaver. Mainao joined Weaving Destination on 25th September, 2012 at the age of 20.
